Analysis of the Charcoal Value Chainin in Katete district

The overall objective of the project is to ensure increased and diversified income to smallholder farm households from agroforestry systems, while sustainably produced wood and non-wood forest products from trees grown outside forests contribute to reduced deforestation and forest degradation in Zambia. Under this project, MARGE’s role is to support the development of a sustainable charcoal value chain. The first step of this support is to carry out a baseline study on the charcoal value chain in Katete District. This study aims at identifying the driving forces behind charcoal production, understanding the key players in the value chain, documenting the current production techniques and possible improvement as well as providing information on the scale and economic value of the charcoal industry in Eastern Province, Zambia.
