Access to modern electricity and rural electrification

Demand assessments for mini-hydro projects in Rwanda

    2018 - Energy4Impact

Within the RESP (RE Small Projects) Development Facility which aims at accelerating the development of small isolated mini-grid projects in Rwanda, the objective of this mission was to undertake a demand assessment of one hydro project. More specifically the objective was to assess the electricity demand and the ability to pay by households (affordability), productive users, social institutions and anchor customers in communities within the generation plant.

Study for the design and assistance to the beginning of a project to produce renewable energy in Garamba park

    2017-2018 / SHER - African Parks Network

The objective of this study aimed at improving the living conditions of the rural populations in the buffer zones around Garamba Park. Initially it was expected to be realized through the construction of several hydropower plants providing access to reliable, efficient, affordable and sustainable energy services. However, the study that consists of two main phases: a pre-feasibility study for the identification of two potential sites, followed by a detailed technical study including the technical aspects and the institutional set-up of the power plant projects found that the hydro resources estimated earlier by the SE4ALL study were less than initially thought. As a result, alternative approaches based on solar energy whad to be explored as well.

    Final evaluation of BOREALE program

    2017 / FONDEM

FONDEM implements the BOREALE program for the period from March 2012 to August 2017. The program is based on the collaboration of several local and international partners, including the European Commission, within the framework of the "Facilité Energie 2". There are two main components of the program: the first is to provide solar power, on a perennial basis, to seven rural communities in southern Madagascar; The second aims to develop rural electrification programs using renewable energy sources in the 9 regions of the country, mobilizing technical and financial partners. However, given the country’s political and strategic development in the sector, these FONDEM electrification programs have been set aside and replaced by a stronger consolidation and dissemination of the results of the electrification component and the launch of two other programs.

SOBA Renewable Energy Case Study Planning

    2017 / Adam Smith International

The Sierra Leone Opportunities for Business Action (SOBA) is a market systems development programme that aims to reduce poverty in Sierra Leone by providing targeted technical and financial investment in business practice innovations. Within their RE activity, SOBA seeks to accelerate access and uptake of affordable renewable energy options, harnessing the potential of pico and solar home systems. The purpose of this assignment was to provide the evidence-base for tracking and validating impact across social, economic and environmental facets for distributed solar energy solutions for households in Sierra Leone seeking to quantify and monetize social benefits obtained from owning pico and solar home systems.

Support to the formulation and execution of intervention in the field of electricity

    2016 - 2020 / Belgium Development Agency

In line with the fields of intervention of the CTB in the sector of the energy in DRC, Rwanda and Mozambique, MARGE is expected to carry out the following activities: 1) assistance to project identification (energy and electricity sector analysis, technical and economic (pre)feasibility studies, project identification and design); 2) Project backstopping (On-demand strategic, methodologic, and technical advice, risk management, technology transfer, capacity building, training, coaching and capitalisation of lessons-learnt); 3) Assistance to project execution (assure independent monitoring and evaluation of activities; assure best practices and quality and safety measures of construction sites; elaborate procurement specifications for works and services; elaborate Terms of Reference for project activities; support project auditing).
